Happy Monday everyone! I thought I’d jot down a few things I’ve had my eye on the past few weeks. This might be the girliest post I’ve ever done so ladies hold on to your skirts and let’s go!

• Cocktail concoctions from Mister Boffin

• These linen iphone cases from Star Creature Studio

• My friend Kellie and I made these ‘Dark Brown Sugar Coconut Oil Cookies’ from Averie Cooks a couple weeks ago. I may have eaten 5 in one setting.

• Design your own garden with this virtual garden planner. It’s amazing!

• For my birthday my mom gave me a great book on learning calligraphy. ‘I Still Love Calligraphy’ is a great place to start if you’re interested in hand lettering.

• Hand painted stones. Who knew?

Year 28 and The Birthday Project

In 5 days I turn 28 years old. When I have a birthday, I usually go all out. Go big or go home is my birthday motto. Remember this? I also share this special day with the holiday Cinco de Mayo. I’m still not sure what we’re actually celebrating but all I know is that I love a good margarita and can down any basket of tortilla chips in front of me.

Thanks to pinterest, it makes birthday shopping a lot easier (hear that husbands?). While searching through my 1,449 pins of things I want, I started to realize that I certainly don’t need anything. At all. I have a whole basement of just STUFF that has no purpose except to make me feel crazy. I then remembered a site Dan’s Aunt Cathy sent me a few weeks ago called “The Birthday Project”. Essentially a woman on her 38th birthday did 38 random acts of kindness. So for this 28th birthday I plan to participate in this project and do 28 random acts of kindness.

I hesitated in even writing this blog post because I definitely don’t want it to come across as “look at me!”. I suppose I’m posting this because the idea really inspired me and maybe it will inspire you too. I will however be ordering one of those jumbo margaritas and at least 2 baskets of chips in honor of my birth. And you are free to join me.

DIY Raised Garden Beds

Happy official Spring friends! A couple weekends ago I put on my work clothes and built our raised garden bed. I thought I’d share with you some of the steps I took to create my square foot gardening bed and the tools I used along the way. I am by no means a skilled carpenter so lets just pretend you can hear my woman power roaring through this post with my power drill in hand and obliging my unnecessary feminine graphic design touches.

Supplies

Supplies - I found most of my building supplies at Home Depot just down the street but I think any hardware store will do!

Compost- We found our compost through Nashville Public Works for $4.23. If you choose to use the Bordeaux facility, expect that you will be greeted by a disheveled man that looks exactly like Charles Mason. He may even talk like ole Charlie. Don’t be afraid…just keep driving towards the compost. Tell the man at the compost that you’ll put the compost into your car by yourself, hand him all the change you have in your sticky change compartment $4.23 and go on your merry way.

Build Your Bed

1. Heave and hoe your compost to your garden destination.

2. Work the ground. Remove all the weeds, grass and level out the existing soil. Using a garden hoe worked best for me. (This is the most exhausting part.)

3. Assemble 4 pieces of wood into a square. Attach by using L-Brackets within each corner.

4. Unroll your chicken wire and place on the bottom of your bed. Secure with metal stakes into the ground. You may need to cut your chicken wire to fit. My fancy sewing scissors did just the trick.

5. With a shovel, fill your bed with a majority of compost with peat moss sprinkled in. Make sure your soil is at least 6” deep.

6. Create your square foot gardening grid by first hammering a nail into the sides of the wood every 12”.

7. Use your garden twine to create a grid by stringing between each nail head.

If you have issues with rabbits or rodents, consider doing steps 8 & 9. Rabbits have been my worst nightmare with gardening and flowers.

8. I bought pieces of wood molding to create my net protector. This probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do because at some point it will rot. I hear plastic PVC pipe is much better. Whichever route you go down, bend the pipes or molding and place them within each corner so it creates a dome over your bed.

9. Purchase a net to drape over the arch. I purchased mine from a local Nashville store called All Seasons

10. The final step! Plant your seeds! Each seed packet will have instructions on the best time to plant for your area of the country.

I hope this helps! I saw my first signs of spinach popping out today which was extremely exciting after all this work.
